Why the sea is good for us: 5 reasons to be happy

The sea nourishes the body, calms the mind and holds precious resources: five reasons to love it, protect it and restore it.

1. Sea air

The sea air is rich in salt aerosols and microparticles generated by the waves. When in contact with the sea, one’s breathing becomes deeper: walking along the shore combines air, light and movement, offering a natural benefit for the body and mind.

2. Oily fish: a natural ally of longevity

Oily fish is naturally rich in omega-3, high-quality protein and vitamins B and D: nutrients that are beneficial for the cardiovascular and nervous systems. The CREA Guidelines recommend 2–4 portions of fish per week as part of a varied and balanced diet.

3. Minerals from the sea

The sea is a natural source of magnesium, potassium and calcium. Soaking or swimming promotes physical activity and muscle well-being; contact with water rich in mineral salts is also studied for its potential beneficial effects on the skin.

4. Mental wellbeing

Looking at the sea, listening to the waves or living near blue spaces is associated with greater psychological well-being. Research on ‘blue spaces’ links the sea to relaxation, physical activity, social interaction and mental health.

5. New active ingredients in beauty products

Posidonia oceanica, the marine plant that symbolises the Mediterranean, is an increasingly valuable resource for natural cosmetics. Rich in polyphenols and bioactive components, it shows how the sea can hold new solutions for skincare too.
